The wild weather conditions forced the evacuation of thousands of homes and at least three people had been confirmed dead in floodwater.
Tornadoes generated by the remnants of ex-tropical cyclone Oswald have also grounded a number of flights.
Bendigo resident Sue Opie had been holidaying in Noosa and said people were trying to find any type of shelter to avoid the brunt of the floods.
“It’s been pretty scary,” she said
“The floods have been that strong that people have just been trying to get off the roads and stay indoors.
“When we arrived it was continuous rain. Each day we thought ‘it can’t get any worse than this’, then it culminated with the cyclone conditions.”
Ms Opie said the devastation could be seen all over the roads, with fallen trees and cars struggling to drive through the water.
She said her flight was cancelled but she was able to catch another one via Sydney yesterday afternoon. Queensland authorities warned last night that there was worse to come, with people in some communities advised to consider leaving their home.
It’s the second time in recent years the region has been devastated by severe floods. Thirty-five people were killed and thousands of homes were destroyed in January 2011.
Winds of up to 100km/h added to the deluge yesterday, while more than 1000 homes in Brisbane were without power.
