Stewart Harris was one of those hoping to become extras in Road to Boston, when crews shoot in Bendigo streets this January.
He is not worried that a part in the movie, which is set in the 1940s, could come at the cost of his beard.
Those in line included students, people looking for something a little different to do and film lovers.
For others, like Heathcote's Karl Robinson, Road to Boston is a chance to keep adding to acting resumes.
He recently spent four months as an extra on Halifax Retribution, the next eight-part installment of mid-90s Australian TV drama Halifax f.p.
The show will star Rebecca Gibney reprising her role as Jane Halifax, profiling a diabolical killer.
"It's always fun on set, especially when you spend longer periods on set. On Halifax there was a focus on continuity. They wanted the same background actors all the time," Mr Robinson said.
"So we spent a lot of time with the main cast's members like Rebecca Gibney and Anthony LaPaglia. People like Rick Donald are so much fun to work with.
"You get to spend time with them, day in, day out and come to know them a lot better."

Mr Robinson has also recently been in a Quit commercial about smoking as well as Neighbours and Wentworth.
An "almost full-time" actor, he goes to about 20 or 30 casting calls a year.
"I'm only coming to this one because it's being filmed where I live. The other stuff I do in Melbourne pays a lot more," Mr Robinson said.
"So this is just a bit of fun."
Halifax Retribution is in post-production and is scheduled to air in 2020, according to Screen Victoria.
