CLASSY all-rounder Mitchell Winter-Irving played a starring role as White Hills began the Bendigo DCA Twenty20 series with a victory in Sunday night’s clash at the QEO.
Chasing 149 for victory, White Hills was in trouble at 3-30 against Huntly-North Epsom.
The in-form Brayden Stepien struck four boundaries in his innings of 22 off 18 at the top of the order.
When Ryan Grundy (3), Gavin Bowles (3) and Stepien were dismissed by marquee player Michael Nalesynyik the Power was on top.
Batting at four, Winter-Irving became the key player in stands of 35 with Gareth Davies, 16 off 15; and then 56 with Oliver Geary, 23 off 20.
From 43 balls faced, Winter-Irving hit a team-high 64 which included six fours and two sixes.
The Demons reached 6-150 with three balls to play.
Nalesynik’s spin captured 3-24 off four overs.
Earlier in the day, Huntly-North Epsom’s Dylan Gibson smacked 10 boundaries on his way to 82 not out off 58 deliveries.
Harry Whittle, 26 off 19; and Brodie McRae, 25 off 26, also batted well for Power.
Best of the White Hills attack were Travis Colley, 4-19, and Winter-Irving, 2-20, off four overs apiece.
Strathdale-Maristians Suns won a thrilling contest with Sandhurst by two runs.
The Suns set a target of 128 after reaching 5-127 at All Seasons Oval in Strathdale’s Beischer Park.
After the early dismissal of Linton Jacobs (9), Nic Baker and marquee player Dom Matarazzo teamed for a 31-run stand.
Baker’s innings of 25 from 27 balls was ended when caught by Eli Bowe off a Liam Bowe delivery.
Matarazzo struck three boundaries in his knock of 26 off 26 and was involved in a 40-run stand with captain Cam Taylor, 15 off 12.
Jon Davidson went on to hit top score of 34 from 37, which included three boundaries.
Best of the Dragons’ attack were Andrew Sheehan, 1-15 off four overs; while the Bowe brothers, Eli and Liam fiished with 1-28 and 1-23 respectively off four and three overs apiece.
Sandhurst’s chase was led by Joel Schneider, 38 off 42 deliveries, and Isaac Conway, 12 off 22.
After a 57-run opening stand by Schneider and Conway, the Dragons lost 3-4.
Conway was stumped by Jacobs off the bowling of Charlie Garratt.
Sheehan was caught by Nick Baker off a Garratt delivery for just two.
A superb knock by Schneider, which included seven boundaries was ended when caught by Jacobs off a Jed Zimmer delivery.
At 3-61 the heat was back on Sandhurst.
Lucas Hutchinson batted well to reach 18 off 14 before he became Garratt’s third wicket of the day.
The Hurst slumped from 3-99 to 7-105 as Matarazzo captured two wickets and Jaryd Wishart completed a run out.
Sandhurst started the final over needing 14 for victory, but it was the Suns who triumphed.
Strathfieldsaye scored a 10-wicket win against Kangaroo Flat at Flight Centre Park in Tannery Lane.
After being sent in, Kangaroo Flat reached 3-120.
Opening batsman Tyler Hinds was unbeaten on 58, while Matt Kile scored 33.
A 42-run stand between Hinds and Nathan Newlan, 17 not out, pushed the target to 120.
Wicket-takers for the Jets were Isaac Hogan, Elijah Slatter and Zoltan Smyth.
Strathfieldsaye’s opening batsmen Greg Lyon, 59 not out, and Nick Scullie, 54 not out, teamed up for an unbeaten stand of 123 in 19 overs.
Leading bowler for the Flat was Adam Burns, 19 runs off four overs.
Bendigo scored a 53-run win against Golden Square in the first of Sunday’s double-header at the QEO.
The Goers made a flying start to the contest as marquee player James Seymour, 58 off 36, and Alex Pearson teamed for a 95-run opening stand.
Seymour’s knock included 10 fours and a six.
Pearson, 30 off 28, was dismissed shortly after Seymour.
Number three batsman Kyle Chant hit six fours and a six in his unbeaten innings of 50 off 26.
Bendigo went on to reach 6-177 against an attack where Scott Johnson, 2-30 was the only multiple wicket-taker.
The Square was 6-48 before Scott Woodman, 33 n.o., and Grant Connelly, 31, teamed for a 76 run stand to push the score to 7-124.
Alex Pearson bowled a great spell to capture 3-22 off four overs.
Eaglehawk scored a 68-run win on Bendigo United’s turf at Harry Trott Oval.
The Hawks made a brilliant start as marquee player Andrew Chalkley and Cory Jacobs struck 68 for the first wicket.
Chalkley hit four boundaries on his way to 32 off 29.
Jacobs achieved what would be a match-high score of 37 off 32, which included three fours.
Number four batsman Zac East kept the run-rate up an unbeaten 33 off 29 balls. East hit a six and four.
Aaron Monro’s short stint off 11 off seven included a six, while Matt White did well to score 16 off 15.
The Hawks reached 5-158 against an attack where Josh Cruse, 2-27, Gunn, 1-30, and Ricky Allan, 1-36 were the wicket-takers.
Bendigo United’s chase was made difficult by the pace, line and length achieved by Hawks’ opening bowlers Richard Tibbett and Sam Fitt.
At 2-17 the Redbacks were under pressure and it grew as Gunn, 17 off 25, was well caught by Brodie Hawke off a Jacobs delivery to be 4-34.
Ricky Mannix struck a hat-trick of fours in one over on his way to a team-high 18 off 18.
Hawke, 2-20 off four, and Chalkley, 2-15 off two, were leading wicket-takers in an attack where five team-mates took at least a wicket as BUCCs was held to 9-90.
