Julie Holden said the money was needed for maintenance around the ageing site, and would be used to ensure its roofs and gutters were kept in good condition.
“It will give the school that welcoming feeling, and show we respect our buildings,” she said.
Without the budget boost, Ms Holden said the school would have to depend on grant applications and parent fundraising for upgrades.
Member for Bendigo West Maree Edwards, who described Chewton Primary School as a big part of its community, said the funding was critical to students’ experience of education.
“Students can’t learn in unsafe, unacceptable buildings,” she said.
“Staff do an amazing job, but you need the facilities so they can do their job to the best of their ability.”
