Workshops, film screenings and games are among the events being held in Bendigo this week as part of Refugee Week.
With Monday marking World Refugee Day, the Rural Australians for Refugees Bendigo group hosted two workshops on the language used in relation to refugees and people seeking asylum.
Asylum Seeker Resource Centre community education co-ordinator Joel Marlan-Tribe, who facilitated the workshops, said they were aimed at building people’s ability to have constructive conversations about refugees.
“There’s a lot of community desire for a more humane approach to refugees from our government and if we’re going to get to a place that’s more humane, we need to shift the conversation about people seeking asylum,” he said.
Refugee Week has been held since 1986 to raise awareness of refugee issues and recognise positive contributions made by refugees.
Several other events will be held in the region throughout the week.
