Mr Cooney will become the new corporate performance director, effective August 20.
“Andrew is a respected leader who has led a variety of innovative and strategic changes in the roles he has performed,” city chief executive Craig Niemann said.
“He will no doubt make a valuable contribution to the city as we strive to achieve our vision of creating the world’s most liveable community.”
Mr Cooney is presently the partnerships and sector performance executive director at the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning.
He is also the chair of the Bendigo division of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.
The Bendigo resident has previously worked as the governance and strategy general manager at Coliban Water; and as a director and a manager at Loddon Shire Council.
“Andrew has considerable knowledge of the Local Government sector and experience in finance, community development, governance, human resources, risk management and compliance,” Mr Niemann said.
“His achievements include implementing initiatives to achieve cost efficiencies, improving organisational and Board governance, and delivering projects that benefit customers and the community.”
Mr Cooney said he was really excited by the opportunity to join the city and make a valuable contribution to the local community.
“I also look forward to getting to know the staff and leading the high-performing Corporate Performance function of the organisation,” he said.
City community partnerships manager Steven Abbott has been acting in the corporate performance director role since Kerryn Ellis departed earlier this month to become the corporate services general manager at the Independent Broad-based Anti-corruption Commission.
