A DRIVER has been issued with an infringement notice after a crash extensively damaged a historic Bendigo tram.
The crash between a car and tram took place about 3.30pm on Sunday near Lake Weeroona.
Two boys who were passengers in the car were treated at the scene for cuts, abrasions and bruising after the crash. No one on the tram was injured.
The crash badly damaged one end of the 1924 tram, known as the Santa tram.
Other news:
Bendigo Highway Patrol Leading Senior Constable David Hockey said the car was making a left turn into Caledonia Street from Weeroona Avenue when it overshot the intersection, sliding in the wet.
Leading Senior Constable Hockey said the car then crashed into the stationary tram, which was giving way to traffic on Caledonia Street.
He said both car and tram were badly damaged in the crash.
Bendigo Heritage Attractions chief executive James Reade said the incident was a timely reminder for drivers both that there were trams on the road, and to slow down in the wet.
Mr Reade said Bendigo Tramways would go through the details of the damage to the tram with insurers in the coming days.
