Suns blast 202 in Twenty20 victory against Bendigo United

STRATHDALE-Maristians last night became the first team to score more than 200 in the Bendigo Bank Bendigo District Cricket Association’s Twenty20 competition.The Suns blasted 6-202 against Bendigo United at Bell Oval, with the Redbacks replying with 133.This is the fourth year of the BDCA’s Twenty20 competition, with the Suns creating a piece of history as the first team to get to 200.The key scorers in the Suns’ mammoth total were Craig Howard (46 n.o. off 21), Jonathan Davidson (45 off 30), opener Jacob DeAraugo (39 off 27) and Ryan Haythorpe (37 n.o. off 20).Howard and Haythorpe shared in an unbroken stand of 86 off the last 40 balls of the innings.The Suns had 84 on the board at the halfway mark, before smashing 118 off the last 10 overs.The Redbacks’ Zac Mona found out just how cruel the game of Twenty20 can be for bowlers as his four overs went for 56 runs.Mona did capture the wicket of Jacob DeAraugo.Craig Trethowan (2-37) and spinner Paul Podosky (2-26), who at one stage was on a hat-trick, took two wickets each for the Redbacks, who are still to win a game in the tournament.The best of the Bendigo United batsmen in its run-chase were Joel Spry (34 off 21) and Cadman Turner (21 off 15).Opener Wayne Fidler made 13 off 11 balls before he was run-out courtesy of Suns’ keeper Linton Jacobs, who threw the ball between his legs.Howard followed his unbeaten 46 with 2-32 off 3.5 overs.Before last night, the previous highest Twenty20 score had been the 8-194 the Suns made against White Hills in 2008-09.? Sandhurst ended Kangaroo Flat’s unbeaten run with a comfortable seven-wicket victory at Dower Park.Batting first, the Roos were restricted to a score of just 9-109.Last week against Bendigo, Roos openers Tyler Hinds and Brent Hamblin combined to score 134 runs.Last night they combined for just 18 – Hamblin making 10 and Hinds eight.Mitchell Collins top-scored for the Roos with 29 off 26 at No.5, while Peter Patullo added 18 off 21.Sandhurst lost just three wickets and took only 16.4 overs to chase its target down, reaching 3-110.The mainstay of the innings was opener Andrew Bourne, who made 38 off 41 balls as the Dragons improved their record to 2-1.Levi Walker finished unbeaten on 23 off 26.? Bendigo won its first game with an easy eight-wicket victory over Huntly-North Bendigo at Strauch Reserve.The Power was bowled out for just 87 batting first, with opener Ryan Grundy (47 off 40) contributing more than half the runs.Michael Hill (2-27), Hayden Polglase (2-18) and Mark Ryan (2-7) all took two wickets for the Goers, who answered with 2-88 in 11.4 overs, with Hill (43 off 37) and Polglase (31 n.o. off 28) leading the way.? Strathfieldsaye has given itself a chance of qualifying for the semi-finals with a five-wicket win over White Hills at Tannery Lane.Daniel Larke (23 off 24) top-scored in the Demons’ 8-102 batting first.Justin Hargreaves (2-11) and skipper Ben Gunn (2-16) were the multiple wicket-takers for the Jets.The Jets took 15.3 overs to reach their target as they answered with 5-106.Following his 160 last Saturday, Gunn was dismissed in the first over by Rhys Irwin (1-31) for eight. Veteran Greg Lyon batted well in making 31 off 41, while Larke took 2-7 off one over for the Demons.
