Standing on the third tee (started on the back-nine) Herbert was five-under for the day, but costly bogeys have pushed him back down the leaderboard to T47.
However, the 25-year-old started the day well by making the turn at three-under which included three birdies in a row on holes 14,15 and 16.
He then continued with top form by opening the front-nine with back-to-back birdies before encounting trouble.
A wayward drive and a missed approach on the par-five saw Herbert drop a shot, followed by a par on the fourth and then three consecutive bogeys on the fifth, sixth and seventh.
By the time Herbert was standing on the ninth tee he was at one-under for the round.
After hitting the green in three and an unfortunate two putt, it moved Herbert to even-par for the day and one-under ahead of Saturday's third round which he will tee off at 11.45pm AEST tonight alongside Brooks Koepka.
The WGC tournament has a smaller field than usual PGA and European Tour events, therefore there is no cut line and Herbert will be ready top bounce back during day three.
Meanwhile, fellow Australian Cameron Smith made headlines by equalling the PGA Tour record for fewest putts in a single round (18) during his eight-under 62 on Friday.
Smith is now at 11-under total (T2), two shots behind English.
