Community members who intervened as a man allegedly tried to drown his child have been commended by police.

Police were called to the Dampier foreshore in Western Australia's Pilbara region about 6.15am on September 4.
Police said members of the community rescued the child, who was taken to hospital for assessment but is believed to be physically unharmed.
"The WA Police Force want to commend the bravery and actions of the community members who intervened," police said in a statement.
The man was arrested at the beach and is assisting police with their inquiries.
